Networks in Malaysia
5G availableYour eSIM connects automatically to these local carriers — there's nothing to choose.
Real-world speed and coverage depend on your exact location, your device, and how busy the network is. Rural and remote areas may be slower or 4G-only.
Will your phone work?
Check eSIM support in two seconds — before you buy.
Dial *#06# on your phone. If an “EID” number appears, it's eSIM-ready. You can also look for “Add eSIM” or “Add mobile plan” in your Settings.
Haven't installed it yet? Unactivated eSIMs are fully refundable within 30 days. And if it won't install on a compatible, unlocked phone, contact us and we'll make it right.

Heading to Malaysia? A Malaysia eSIM gives you prepaid mobile data from the moment you arrive — no roaming bill shock and no hunting for a local SIM card. Install your alodata eSIM before you travel, switch it on when you land, and stay online for maps, rides, bookings, and keeping in touch.
In Malaysia, your eSIM connects to established local networks (Celcom Axiata Berhad, Maxis, DiGi, UMobile), so coverage is the same you'd get from a local carrier.
Malaysia eSIM plans at a glance
alodata currently offers 15 eSIM data plans for Malaysia, so you can match a small bundle to a weekend trip or a larger one to a month of remote work — each plan shows its data, validity, and price before you buy.
Coverage and networks in Malaysia
Your Malaysia eSIM roams on trusted networks and delivers high-speed data with no throttling on standard plans. You can track your remaining data in real time from your account, so there are no surprises mid-trip.
Coverage is strong and quick across Peninsular Malaysia — Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka, the Cameron Highlands and the main highways — and around the larger Borneo cities of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, with 5G in the biggest urban centres. It thins across the interior rainforest of Sabah and Sarawak, on the smaller islands and up around Mount Kinabalu, where the network follows the towns and main roads.
Getting connected in Malaysia
Prepaid SIMs in Malaysia need passport registration and are sold at KLIA airport and carrier shops, where staff will usually set them up for you. Tourist data packs are reasonably priced, but validity is often short and tied to a fixed number of days, so it pays to check the expiry and the data cap before you buy rather than after. A travel eSIM avoids the counter and the registration form, and lets you land at Kuala Lumpur already connected for the train or Grab into the city.
The internet is mostly open and everyday travel, map and messaging apps work normally, though Malaysia filters gambling, adult and some political or religious content, and blocks the odd site under its content laws. None of that affects ordinary travel use, and a roaming eSIM that routes abroad quietly bypasses the filtering if you ever land on a blocked page while moving between the peninsula and Borneo.
In the rainforest interior of Borneo, on the dive islands like Sipadan and the Perhentians, and on river trips up the Kinabatangan, expect coverage only near lodges, towns and jetties, with long offline stretches in between. Download offline maps and your bookings before you leave the city, and treat a signal at a remote longhouse or island resort as a bonus rather than a certainty.
KLIA and the other Malaysian airports have SIM kiosks, but they sit past immigration and baggage claim, run tourist-priced packs and take your passport for registration in yet another queue after landing. An eSIM installed before you fly means you clear the arrivals hall and step onto the KLIA Ekspres or into a Grab already online, with your hotel address and map ready and no counter to find.
Who these Malaysia eSIM plans are for
They suit short trips and longer stays alike: tourists who want maps and messaging, digital nomads working remotely, and business travelers who need reliable data on arrival. Keep your home number active on your primary SIM while alodata handles data.
Malaysia delivers 5G through a single shared wholesale network (DNB), so whether you actually get 5G depends on your plan's partner operator — but 4G is universal, fast and inexpensive, so an ordinary plan keeps you well connected even without 5G. Any network is fine for Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Melaka; for East Malaysia favour broader coverage if you are heading beyond the main Borneo cities.
