How to install and activate an eSIM
Last updated: July 13, 2026
Installing an alodata eSIM takes a couple of minutes. We recommend installing before you travel (over Wi-Fi) and only enabling data roaming for the eSIM line once you arrive at your destination.
The short version
Buy your plan, get a QR code by email, and scan it in your phone settings while on Wi-Fi — ideally before you fly. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line once you land, and you are connected.
Before you start
Make sure your device supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, and connect to Wi-Fi. Have the QR code from your alodata order email ready on another screen, or save the activation details.
On iPhone
- Open Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM.
- Choose 'Use QR Code' and scan the code from your order email.
- Label the plan (e.g. 'alodata Travel') and keep your primary line as your default for calls.
- On arrival, turn on 'Data Roaming' for the alodata line and set it as your mobile data line.
On Android (Pixel, Galaxy, and others)
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (or Connections → SIM manager) → Add eSIM / Download a SIM instead.
- Scan the QR code from your order email and confirm the download.
- On arrival, enable the eSIM, turn on roaming for that line, and select it for mobile data.
Common pitfalls
Install over Wi-Fi, not mobile data. Don't delete the eSIM to reinstall it — most plans can only be installed once. If you have no data at your destination, check that roaming is enabled for the alodata line and that it's selected as the mobile data line.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing on mobile data — always scan the QR code while connected to Wi-Fi.
- Deleting the eSIM to reinstall it — most plans can only be installed once.
- Leaving data roaming off for the eSIM at your destination — it needs to be on.
- Setting the eSIM up but leaving your old SIM as the data line — select the eSIM for data.

Frequently asked questions
Do I install the eSIM before or after I arrive?
Install before you travel, on Wi-Fi. Keep data roaming off until you land, then switch it on for the eSIM line — installing early does not start your plan.
My eSIM installed but I have no data — why?
Almost always because data roaming is off for the eSIM, or it is not set as your mobile data line. Turn roaming on for the alodata line and select it for data. See our troubleshooting guide if it persists.
Can I install the same eSIM on a second phone?
No. Each eSIM installs on one device, and most install only once. If you switch phones you will need a new eSIM.
