Networks in Italy
5G availableYour eSIM connects automatically to these local carriers — there's nothing to choose.
Real-world speed and coverage depend on your exact location, your device, and how busy the network is. Rural and remote areas may be slower or 4G-only.
Will your phone work?
Check eSIM support in two seconds — before you buy.
Dial *#06# on your phone. If an “EID” number appears, it's eSIM-ready. You can also look for “Add eSIM” or “Add mobile plan” in your Settings.
Haven't installed it yet? Unactivated eSIMs are fully refundable within 30 days. And if it won't install on a compatible, unlocked phone, contact us and we'll make it right.

Heading to Italy? A Italy eSIM gives you prepaid mobile data from the moment you arrive — no roaming bill shock and no hunting for a local SIM card. Install your alodata eSIM before you travel, switch it on when you land, and stay online for maps, rides, bookings, and keeping in touch.
In Italy, your eSIM connects to established local networks (Vodafone Italy, Wind Tre, ILIAD Italia), so coverage is the same you'd get from a local carrier.
Italy eSIM plans at a glance
alodata currently offers 18 eSIM data plans for Italy, so you can match a small bundle to a weekend trip or a larger one to a month of remote work — each plan shows its data, validity, and price before you buy.
Coverage and networks in Italy
Your Italy eSIM roams on trusted networks and delivers high-speed data with no throttling on standard plans. You can track your remaining data in real time from your account, so there are no surprises mid-trip.
Coverage across Italy is genuinely good, but not evenly so. TIM runs the widest network and reaches deep into rural areas, mountains and the islands; Vodafone is strong and fast through cities and the big tourist resorts; WindTre and Iliad are solid in urban zones but can thin out in remote pockets. 4G/LTE is near-ubiquitous and 5G blankets most cities, major highways and industrial belts, though away from those corridors you'll often drop back to a perfectly usable 4G signal.
Getting connected in Italy
Italy has registered every prepaid SIM to a named passport since a 2005 anti-terror decree, so there's no walk-out-and-go option. At any TIM, Vodafone, WindTre or Iliad store the clerk scans your original passport (photocopies get refused) and ties the number to you before it activates, a 5-to-10-minute counter job. Some longer plans even ask for an Italian tax code. A roaming travel eSIM skips all of that: it rides Italian networks under a partner deal, so there's no ID desk, no activation wait, nothing to register.
Everyday internet in Italy is open, and WhatsApp, FaceTime and normal VPN use all work as you'd expect. The wrinkle is the national Piracy Shield: an anti-piracy system that forces Italian providers to DNS-block flagged sites, sometimes over-blocking unrelated ones, and has even pushed some VPN and public-DNS operators to pull back from Italian users. A roaming eSIM that routes your traffic through a home network abroad generally sits outside those local blocks, so the day-to-day worry is really coverage and cost, not access.
Don't count on a steady signal once you leave the towns. In the high Alps and Dolomites, the interior of Sardinia, remote stretches of the Apennines, and on the smaller offshore islands, service gets patchy and can vanish in shadowed valleys, on trailheads and inside long road tunnels. TIM tends to hold on longest in these spots, but no operator blankets every ridge and cove, so plan to be offline for parts of any serious hike or backcountry drive.
Landing at Fiumicino or Malpensa with no plan means clearing passport control, waiting on baggage, then hunting down a TIM or Vodafone kiosk, some tucked by the luggage belts, and queuing again behind other tired arrivals to hand over your passport for a marked-up tourist price. Store hours are limited, and lines build on international arrivals. An eSIM you install at home before the flight is simply live the moment the plane's cellular signal returns, so you walk straight out already online.
Who these Italy eSIM plans are for
They suit short trips and longer stays alike: tourists who want maps and messaging, digital nomads working remotely, and business travelers who need reliable data on arrival. Keep your home number active on your primary SIM while alodata handles data.
Italy's train and road network threads through long tunnels and steep valleys, so your signal will drop and jump repeatedly on a Rome-Florence-Venice run or any Alpine drive. Before you lose bars, cache offline maps, download your rail tickets and QR boarding passes, and save any address or booking you'll need at the far end. Data that already lives on your phone beats a full-strength connection you won't have while you're actually moving through the mountains.
