How does unlimited data work?

Every unlimited plan includes the full-speed allowance shown on its card — either an amount per day that refills every 24 hours (counted from your first use), or one total amount you can use on any day of your trip.

Once the full-speed allowance is used up, you stay connected with unlimited data at the reduced speed shown — no cut-off in normal use and no extra charges.

As a rough guide: 1.25 Mbps is usually enough for messaging, maps, social feeds, music and video calls, while 2 Mbps can also handle standard-quality video streaming.

Within your full-speed allowance your data is not slowed down — you get up to 5G/4G speeds wherever the local network offers them.

About eSIM data in Hong Kong

Heading to Hong Kong? A Hong Kong eSIM gives you prepaid mobile data from the moment you arrive — no roaming bill shock and no hunting for a local SIM card. Install your alodata eSIM before you travel, switch it on when you land, and stay online for maps, rides, bookings, and keeping in touch.

In Hong Kong, the mobile market is served by established local carriers (China Mobile Hong Kong Company Ltd., SmarTone, 3 Hong Kong, Hong Kong Telecom). Your eSIM roams onto an available partner network automatically — which carrier that is depends on the profile assigned to your eSIM and can't be chosen.

Hong Kong eSIM plans at a glance

alodata currently offers 15 eSIM data plans for Hong Kong, so you can match a small bundle to a weekend trip or a larger one to a month of remote work — each plan shows its data, validity, and price before you buy.

Coverage and networks in Hong Kong

Your Hong Kong eSIM roams on trusted local networks with fast 5G/4G data. Every plan states its exact deal — a set data amount at full speed, or unlimited data with a stated full-speed allowance — and you can track your remaining data in real time from your account, so there are no surprises mid-trip.

Dense, fast coverage blankets the whole territory, including deep inside the MTR metro, through the cross-harbour tunnels, up to Victoria Peak and out to the outlying islands like Lamma and Cheung Chau, with widespread 5G across Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. This is a compact, hyper-connected city where a strong signal is the norm almost everywhere, from the ferry piers to the hiking trails on the ridgelines above the harbour.

Getting connected in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the easiest places in Asia to get a local SIM: prepaid cards are sold with no registration at the airport, 7-Eleven, Circle K and vending machines, and you can be online within minutes. That ease is real, but the counters and machines still charge tourist rates and sit past immigration, and a travel eSIM you set up before flying saves even that step — handy on a short stopover, or if Hong Kong is your gateway before a mainland China leg.

Hong Kong keeps an open, unfiltered internet distinct from the mainland, so Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and every social and messaging app work normally without a VPN — a crucial difference to grasp if your trip also includes mainland China, where those same apps are blocked. Your Hong Kong SIM or eSIM behaves like any Western connection here, but it will not carry that openness across the border into Shenzhen.

The only places coverage briefly thins are the remoter country-park trails and the far corners of the outlying islands — the high sections of the MacLehose Trail, the back of Lantau — where the signal can drop between ridges. Even there it is rarely far away, but download an offline trail map before a long hike above the city.

Hong Kong International has SIM vending machines and shops, but they sit past a busy immigration hall, and on a tight connection or a stopover the queue eats time you don't have. An eSIM activated before you fly means you clear the airport and board the Airport Express or a taxi into Central already online, with your hotel directions and Octopus-card top-up ready to go.

Who these Hong Kong eSIM plans are for

They suit short trips and longer stays alike: tourists who want maps and messaging, digital nomads working remotely, and business travelers who need reliable data on arrival. Keep your home number active on your primary SIM while alodata handles data.

Because the mainland blocks the apps that work freely here, Hong Kong is an ideal place to set up a wider Asia-regional or China-capable eSIM before you cross into Shenzhen or fly on into the mainland, so you stay reachable on WhatsApp and Google the moment you arrive there. For a Hong Kong-only trip any plan is fine — coverage is uniformly excellent — so choose on data and price.
